What is concert dress code? The concert attire for both orchestras is black pants or black floor-length skirt and any solid color shirt or blouse OTHER than black or white. The object is to both flood the stage with colour and not look like a large group of head waiters.
-
What should I do if I have to miss a rehearsal?First off, do your UTMOST NEVER to miss a rehearsal. That's where the bulk of our work is done and the community you build depends upon you. If you must be absent from a rehearsal, fill out this google form for any absence three weeks before the rehearsal takes place.
-
What is the attendance policy? For students registered for the course, your grade is participation dependent. See the course syllabus for details.
-
How are the ensembles seated?Seating rotates every concert and sometimes within specific repertoire on the same concert. It is never a strict hierarchy. Members of different ensemble, repertoire, and previous experience are placed throughout the sections to strength both the section and the players within it.
-
Do I have to register for the orchestra as a course? You do not. UR students may register for the appropriate 1-credit course (MUSC153 for URSO, MUSC154 for URCO), but may perform with the groups via audition and invitation.
-
How will the course be graded? The course is effort and attendance-based.
-
How can I get more involved in the orchestras?Join the University of Rochester Orchestra Committee (UROC)! Join our library staff! Take a conducting class or reach out to our music director!
-
What is the difference between the orchestras? The University of Rochester Symphony Orchestra (URSO) is a large collegiate/civic ensemble of around ninety to one hundred students, faculty, and community members playing large scale symphonic repertoire. Recent concerts have included Mahler, Shostakovich, and Dvorak symphonies, significant contemporary works by Jennifer Higdon, Christopher Theofanidis, and Jonthan Bailey Holland, as well as American masters David Diamond and Aaron Copland. The University of Rochester Chamber Orchestra (URCO) is made up of closer to fifty members, largely students, and performs music of wide ranging repertoire and ensemble structure. Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Beethoven symphonies have been recent program items, as has Stravinsky and Thea Musgrave. Due to its smaller size, URCO has been also able to travel and collaborate with other organizations on campus, in the Rochester community, and around the globe. URCO is the ensemble that collaborations annually with the University choirs.
-
When do the orchestras rehearse? The Symphony Orchestra rehearses Tuesdays from 7:30-10:00pm. The Chamber Orchestra rehearses Mondays from 4:50-6:00pm and Wednesdays from 4:50-7:00pm. Rehearsals take place in Upper Strong Auditorium.
-
Can I switch to the other orchestra for a semester? Permanently? Can I be in both? You can. And, depending upon repertoire, we will often will trade personnel between the ensembles as parts, forces, and concerts warrant.
-
How do I audition for the orchestras?Auditions occur at the start of each Fall semester. If you are interested in joining the orchestras at another time, please reach out to the music director.
